Late Aser Hany goal gives Wadi Degla a 1-0 upset of Zamalek in the Egypt Capital Cup

Wadi Degla beat Zamalek 1-0 on Monday 2 November 2026 in the second group round of the Egypt Capital Cup, with substitute Aser Hany scoring the only goal in the 89th minute, leaving Degla top of their group on six points and Zamalek bottom without a point after a second straight defeat.

How the late winner arrived

The match stayed goalless for most of the evening. Zamalek goalkeeper Omar Abdelaziz was called into action early, saving a dangerous header from Wadi Degla’s Yahya Mostafa in the 10th minute, and Degla’s goalkeeper also kept out early Zamalek pressure. After the break, Zamalek’s Chico Banza missed a clear chance in the 47th minute, breaking through on goal but firing over the bar. With the game heading for a draw, Degla struck in the closing minutes: a cross into the Zamalek penalty area was not cleared, the ball fell to Aser Hany, and he struck it first time past Abdelaziz to settle the match 1-0.

What the result does to the group

The win takes Wadi Degla to six points from two matches, after they had also beaten Al Ittihad Alexandria 1-0 in the opening round. They now sit top of their group, ahead of ZED on three points, with Talaea El Gaish and Al Ittihad still without a point and Zamalek bottom, also on zero. For Zamalek, this was a second straight defeat in the competition, following a 3-0 loss to ZED in the first round — a start that leaves the White Knights with work to do to rescue their campaign in the remaining group matches.

Degla’s coach: the cup is a chance for the club’s young players

Speaking on television after the match, Wadi Degla head coach Mustafa Shobaita said his side had spent the week preparing for Zamalek, noting that Zamalek played with a deep defence and that Degla had focused on using the flanks and playing between the lines to find a goal. He said the club’s aim in the Egypt Capital Cup is to give young players a chance, naming goalscorer Aser Hany, born in 2009, and Hazem, born in 2007, as well as goalkeeper Gharisha, born in 2006, whom he tipped for a big future. Shobaita also praised Zamalek goalkeeper Omar Abdelaziz, saying he stopped several chances and that he had wished Degla scored more. He added that the team’s level is improving step by step, and that the match he was most disappointed by this season was against Pyramids, when Degla played well against the league leaders but did not take their chances.
